READING

THE REBEL ANGELS
Robertson Davies
This is the third time I'm reading this novel. Robertson Davies is the most wonderful novelist — if you haven't read anything by him, treat yourself!

LISTENING

IN BETWEEN TEARS
Irma Thomas
I found a CD of this album today, I've been searching for years as I've only had a taped copy. It's one of the best soul albums ever. It's funny, intense, knowing and a joy to listen to.

A Rainy Day Entry
8 December, 2001

It's been raining for a week now. Gray and raining. And when it hasn't been raining, the wind has been blowing. And sometimes the wind has been blowing the gray and the rain. Even Matthew said this morning, “I haven't seen the sun for a week Dad!”

For all that it's been a good day. We've a routine now where Matthew wakes around 5 or 6am and comes into our bed for a cuddle and sleep. This morning he and I took up a third of the bed, his Teletubby Lala took up a third, and Debbie took up the other third. If I lay on my side and didn't move, I took up exactly the space I was allocated. I got up at 5.30am and pottered around for an hour or so on the computer and then went back to bed and slept with the others until 8am. We had a morning of eating and reading and playing and then went into town for a walk and shop. Matthew was wearing a t-shirt with the legend “If you think I'm bad, wait till you see my Daddy” across the front of it. It was amazing how many people read and commented on it. I just did my best to look bad. “Hi, I'm Matthew's Dad, I'm baaaaad”.

Coming home he fell asleep in the car so we stopped at a cafe, bought a takeaway coffee for me and a peppermint tea for Deb and drove to the beach and sat in the car drinking as the rain fell softly on the water. I had the window down a bit and the rain drifted inside from time to time and wet my hand. We sat and talked and watched. It was rather lovely.

I'm off to bed to read my book. I'm tired of staring at a computer screen!
