THE DEPTFORD TRILOGY
Robertson Davies
Deb is horribly upset at the recent appearance of stretch marks. C'est la vie. It's the sign of a life well-lived!
It's been a lazy old day. A lazy, gray, wet cold day. A reading of books in front of the heater and taking naps in the middle of the afternoon day. A Sunday paper and coffee day. My parents took Matthew for the day and Deb and I have been lazy all day. Sometimes we'd look at each other and Deb would say, “I feel really guilty, like I should be doing something productive”, but then we'd go back to being lazy!
Deb looked at me and asked, “What do you think I should do?" It took me a little while to figure out she meant with work, with life. I told her she needs to find a passion, and see where that takes her. This coming year she'll be at home with the baby. It's not a year off — it's hard work — but it is an opportunity to reflect, to mull over, to look at some different things.
Maybe it's all the Robertson Davies I've been reading lately, but the quality of a life lived seems increasingly of importance to me right now. If you don't do the things you want, or live in the way you want, or even just have an inner life that's vibrant and alive and rich, at some stage you're going to sit back and reflect and regret.
So this is a year where lazy old days are important. They give a space to think about the important things and a space to think about nothing at all.
