Party animals
Sunday 11 June 2000

I guess it's a sign of the times that I woke up this morning and thought, in all honesty, that it would have made much more sense not to have gone to the party last night, but instead taken advantage of Matthew staying with his cousins and gone to bed at 8pm. That way I could have had 12 hours sleep instead of the under 7 I finally got. That didn't even begin to break into the sleep deficit of the past week.

It wasn't that it was a bad party. It was more that me and Deb really didn't have a whole lot in common with the 20-something crowd there. As the only people there with house/mortgage/kid(s), tales of university, flatting and flatmate woes, and thoughts of what jobs you might do when you graduate, were, well, no longer relevant to us. As, I'm sure, talk of what new word Matthew had spoken and plans for house extensions would have been to them. Actually the house extensions one is not relevant to us either unless we win the lottery on the near future!

And I have to say their taste in music was dubious. Someone said, “Oh, what was that band … you know, the one with Johnny Rotten and that Sid Vicious guy in?”. Another said, as they put on Sister Sledge as “good party music”, “I love We Are Family, it was my song when it came out! I was 4 years old.”

Still, I guess me falling asleep on the couch somewhere around 11pm wasn't the sort of thing guaranteed to liven up a party …

The party of the weekend, though, was at our place, 3pm this afternoon. Matthew's 2 year old birthday party. (His actual birthday is on 16 June). It was just a small one, with my parents, and my sister, her husband and their two kids, Alex and Georgia, but it rocked!

Three toddlers under three, juiced up on sugar, food colouring, cheerios, chocolate cake and ice cream is a sure-fire recipe for fun. Actually there were remarkably few tears, I guess there enough new toys for everyone to play with without feeling left out. We bought Matthew a small tent that sets itself up without any pegs. It's in his bedroom set up right now. I think he's going to have a lot of fun hiding and playing in there. He's already told one cat, in no uncertain terms, that it's his place!

Wow, two parties in 24 hours. That's like our six-month quota all in one day.
