I cracked again last night. Two new pairs of trousers. Two! From the same expensive shop I got my first pair from … And I'm still not done. It seems to more you get, the more you further need to match what you've just bought!

The rainbow and the moon

Saturday 16 September 2000

Yesterday morning there were some hazy showers drifting up the harbour on the hills, sheets of soft, slow rain hanging in the sky. And the sun appeared, and a rainbow formed across the water, arching across the bay before it got lost in the rain. We held Matthew up to look at it, going, “Oh wow! Rainbow” as he knelt on the couch looking out the window.

Yesterday night he stayed at my parents. In the evening I was walking with Debbie along the waterfront in the cold, still night air. The lights shimmered on the water. We walked across a small bridge and smelt the sea in the air. And we looked up just as the moon came up over the hills. A full, heavy, creamy moon. Hanging in the darkness just over the water.

They both seemed good portents to me. The rainbow and the moon.
