SUMMER

It's supposed to be summer! It's cold, wet and windy. Weather like this has no redeeming features at this time of year. We're all going slightly stir crazy here.

A Long Day
13 February, 2002

Matthew in a summer pose

“Come play the rocket game with me Dad.” It's still morning. It's a day at home for Matthew. It's wet and cold. It looks like a long day.

I jump onto the couch (the rocketship). “Ok, who am I?”

“You're Pete. I'm Sam. Just play, Dad! … This is the gun. Are there space monsters Dad?”
“Yes.”
BANG BANG BANG BANG “I'm shooting them Dad … ok, we've landed now, I need to wear my goggles.” Matthew puts on some plastic protection goggles. I get up off the couch.

“Pretend you're a space monster Dad.”

ROAR ROAR ROAR

BANG BANG BANG BANG “I shot you space monster!”

“No, you missed.”
“Ok, pretend you're a friendly space monster”
SOFT NICE SOUNDING ROAR
“Friendly space monster?”
“Yes?”
“No, no, now you're a bad lion”
GROWL GROWL GROWL
STARTLED THREE YEAR OLD
“No, you're a friendly lion!!!”
MEWPURR MEWPURR
“Friendly lion, friendly lion?”
MEWPURR, “yes?”
“You used to be a spaceman, I'll shoot you and turn you back to a spaceman”
“Ok”
BANG BANG BANG BANG
“Pete, you're back! You used to be a spacemonster and a friendly lion. Come back into the rocketship.”

A whole five minutes has passed. It's still morning. It's still wet and cold outside. It still looks like a long day ahead.
