2:45am

2:45am. It's just one of those nights where I can't sleep. No real reason for it.

I get up and stand in the cold of the kitchen, looking out across the water shimmering bright with the street lights. I look to see if any cars are moving. I always wonder why someone would be driving in these early hours of the morning. I couldn't see any cars today in the couple minutes I looked. That's good. 2:45am is a time for sleeping, not driving.

Matthew's had a cold these past few days. Not really bad, but enough for him to stay at home. His nose has been constantly running. We've been following him around, tissues at the ready, then reaching in and wiping the snot from his face. He's not been impressed, often running the length of the house at the site of the tissue. I think he got resigned to it today though — he came up to me and went, “clean nose” and pointed at the tissues.

He's been coughing a lot too. Especially in bed at night. Deb and I will be lying there, hearing him cough. Often we've had to get him and give him some cough medicine “magic juice” in Matt-speak. It's so hard hearing him cough and knowing there's really not much you can do about it.

I always feel weird if I'm awake at this time of the day. Sometimes I'm hyped up, and other times I'm sleepy, but everything's always slightly off-kilter. Like I'm in a dream, or have drunk too much coffee. I am not at all a nite-owl.

Deb and I have been invited to a party on Saturday night. I can't remember the last party I went too. I rang my sister up to see if she could have Matthew stay over that night. “Sure we can, you guys going out?” “Yeah, we got invited to a party” The silence of a jaw dropping. “A party? Hey Darren (her husband), you hear that — Mike and Deb have been invited to a party!” The silence of another jaw dropping.

Rereading, that sounds so bad. We're really nice people ya know. Honest. And it's not like we haven't been to parties before. We know how to act. Sure we do. And we can talk to people. Sure we can. And if I get really drunk I can dance.

You could invite us to your party …
