During Matthew's bath tonight, I came back into the room to see him slowly standing up, looking down between his legs. He stood there and pulled on his penis, then looked up, saw me, and smiled, and said, proudly, “It's a penis!”

It was a really proud moment for me, of course, but I did spend a bit of time putting him right on etiquette. Saying “penis” is fine among males, but when you're trying to impress a women, well, it's not really appropriate.

It needs to have a name, and never, never, use an indefinite pronoun. It should always be a definite pronoun. I told him that “King Dong”, “The Big Boy” and “The Log” were the sort of words/images he should be using. Gets a girl every time …

Of course he needs to find his own names.

Colds suck

Sunday 7 January 2001

Is there anything worse than a cold in midsummer? It's been perhaps the best weekend in the past year — hot so that the concrete stings into your bare feet, calm with only the lightest of southerly breezes ruffling the water, and sunny, with that pure clarity of summer light.

The best weekend, and I've felt miserable. Tired, sneezing, sweaty, coughing and runny nose. And Matthew's had a bad cough also, so a lot's fallen on Debbie, who's already stressed as she's going back to work tomorrow. We've coped, but we've all been a lot better.

We had a good talk this morning, sitting in bed with cups of tea while Matthew watched a video. (For all the evils of television and guilt of using videos to babysit, sometimes it's a blessed thing to switch on “Postman Pat” for 45mins of toddler fun!) Debbie opened up a lot about some of her fears and insecurities at work, and about how scared she is to leave a job and take a plunge on this company — “I always think setting up a company is for other people Mike, I'm always someone who works for them”.

The thing of it is, I think we can make something really good happen. Along with the other guy I'll be working with, we all complement each other very well. And I know that when Debbie and I work on something together, the result is markedly better than either of us could achieve on our own. So we've done lots of talking, and reassuring, and I think made some progress. I think we'll do this.
